Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
