Senate Passes Measure to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will force the release of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to forestall the bipartisan effort involving a case that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a 427-1 tally.

The public have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president indicated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Although Trump has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the official management of the investigation as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the measure over the weekend, and announced he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, applauded after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he was concerned the measure would disclose specific data of witnesses, persons of interest and others implicated in the investigation.
